That is, until you discover a weird feature: it’s free! In fact, this toaster has no buttons or levers, but it produces perfect toast.
You just need to put the slices in for the toaster to sense the movement and start cooking them. Interestingly, it delivers perfect toast every time and never burns.
What’s the secret? When Sunbeam engineer Ludwik J. Koci created it, he inserted a series of levers that lowered and raised two slices, and inside was a mechanical bimetal thermostat that knew when to stop toasting rather than relying on a timer.
The mechanical thermostat is actually a bimetal bar that flexes as it toasts, interrupting the flow of heat.
